In Ideas on Language in Early Latin Christianity , Tim Denecker investigates, in a comprehensive and systematic way, the views held on the history, diversity and properties of language(s) by Christian Latin authors from Tertullian (b. c.160) to Isidore of Seville (d. 636). This historical period witnessed various sociocultural changes, affecting linguistic situations and the ways in which these were perceived. Christian intellectuals were confronted with languages other than Latin in the context of the propagation of faith, and in reflecting on language were bound to comply with the relevant biblical accounts. Whereas previous research has mostly focused on the (indeed vital) contribution of Augustine, the present study reveals the diversified and dynamic nature of linguistic reflection in early Latin Christianity.

‘Latin in Byzantium’ explores the linguistic competence, cultural identity, and transmission of Latin texts in the ‘noua Roma’ between the fourth and the ninth centuries. Drawing together texts from a number of fields (e.g., law, grammar, religion, and tactics) and across a range of different forms (e.g., palaeographic, epigraphic, and papyrological), this important project provides scholars for the first time with an in-depth knowledge of both the Latin-speaking milieux in Byzantium, and of the contexts in which Latin was used. Crucially, the ancient sources studied in this volume are also analysed in their broader political and sociological context, providing rich material for study across different disciplines and making this volume an important resource for closing the gaps between literary and non-literary texts, history, and philology.

The ritual murder accusation is one of a series of myths that fall under the label blood libel, and describes the medieval legend that Jews require Christian blood for obscure religious purposes and are capable of committing murder to obtain it. This malicious myth continues to have an explosive afterlife in the public sphere, where Sarah Palin's 2011 gaffe is only the latest reminder of its power to excite controversy. Blood Libel is the first book-length study to analyze the recent historiography of the ritual murder accusation and to consider these debates in the context of intellectual and cultural history as well as methodology. Hannah R. Johnson articulates how ethics shapes methodological decisions in the study of the accusation and how questions about methodology, in turn, pose ethical problems of interpretation and understanding.

This book presents a study of twelfth-century humanism seen as an all-embracing discourse in which the human and the divine interact on equal terms. The book focuses on a number of twelfth-century intellectuals, especially Thierry of Chartres, Peter Abelard, William of Conches, Bernard Silvestris, and Alan of Lille. Defining characteristic of their texts is the fact that God, nature and humanity enter into a trialogue of sorts involving many disparate subjects and aiming to bring out the archetypal relatedness of all kinds of knowledge with respect to human nature. As the authors studied here engage the divine and the universe in a joint conversation, the book ultimately concentrates on trying both to understand its appeal and to explain its subsequent demise.

"M. Lindsay Kaplan expands the study of the history of racism through an analysis of the medieval Christian concept of Jewish servitude. Developed through exegetical readings of Biblical figures in canon law, this discourse produces a racial status of hereditary inferiority that justifies the subordination not only of Jews, but of Muslims and Africans as well"--
